How To Find The Surf Badge In The Game

In Pokémon, players need to obtain a certain gym badge to use the HM move Surf outside of battle. In Pokémon Yellow, for example, players must defeat Koga, the leader of Fuschia City's Gym, to use Surf. In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, players require the Fen Badge from Pastoria Gym (Gym Leader #5 - Crasher Wake) to use Surf.

Koga's badge

In the Pokémon video game series, Koga is the former Gym Leader of Fuchsia City's Gym, specialising in Poison-type Pokémon. Koga is a student of ninjutsu and is also known as the Poisonous Ninja Master. He is known for his black spiky hair and dark ninja outfits, usually with a red scarf.

Koga's gym features a maze of invisible walls, filled with trainers studying under him. In the Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen games, players must battle their way through the maze to reach Koga, who awaits in the centre. If players defeat him, they will earn the Soul Badge, as well as TM06 (Toxic), a powerful Poison-type attack.

Koga's gym is typically the fifth gym to be challenged in Generations I, III, and VII. In Generations II and IV, Koga's daughter, Janine, takes over as the Gym Leader, as Koga has advanced to become a member of the Elite Four.

The Soul Badge features a heart shape, which has led to fan speculation that it was mistakenly swapped with the Marsh Badge earned by defeating Sabrina, a Psychic-type user. This theory is supported by the fact that the Japanese names for the badges are based on colours, with the Soul Badge being called the Pink Badge, reflecting Fuchsia City's name.

Fen Badge

The Fen Badge is the fourth badge obtained in the Sinnoh Pokémon League. It is given out at the Pastoria City Gym, which is led by Gym Leader Crasher Wake. Trainers who defeat Crasher Wake receive the Fen Badge.

The Pastoria Gym is based on Water-type Pokémon, and Crasher Wake's Pokémon levels and moves should be researched ahead of time to prepare for the battle. Crasher Wake's Pokémon include Quagsire, Gyarados, and Floatzel. It is recommended that the Pokémon you take into battle are at least Level 30.

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, the Pastoria Gym is the fourth Gym to be challenged, while in Pokémon Platinum, it is the fifth Gym.

In addition to granting the ability to use Defog outside of battle, the Fen Badge also allows the holder to use the HM Surf move outside of battle. This move is particularly useful for clearing routes like Route 210.

Pastoria Gym

The Pastoria Gym is a Water-type Pokémon gym and is the fourth gym challenged in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and their remakes; in Pokémon Platinum, it is the fifth gym. The gym is located in Pastoria City, a fairly small but significant city in the south-east of the island of Sinnoh. The gym leader is Crasher Wake, a Water-type specialist.

To reach Crasher Wake, you must traverse the gym by manipulating water levels using coloured switches. The puzzle is fairly linear, with only one direction to go in and limited button options. The switches must be hit in a certain order to create a path using floating platforms.

• Head left, battle Tuber Jacky, then stand on the yellow button.
• Go down the steps, ignore the green button, and go north through the shallow water until you reach Fisher Walter.
• Press the green button to the right of Fisher Walter.
• Work your way to the left of the gym to battle Sailor Damian.
• Press the blue button next to Sailor Damian.
• Walk south, then go east to battle Tuber Caitlyn.
• Go north to find Fisher Erick.
• Stand on the green button just north of Fisher Erick.
• Go as far south as possible, ignoring the pair of buttons on the left, to stand on the orange button in the corner.
• Go back north and down the steps into the shallow water, heading to the north-west corner to find Sailor Samson.
• Stand on the blue button next to Sailor Samson.

You can now exit and face Crasher Wake. It is recommended that the Pokémon you take into battle are at least Level 30. Crasher Wake uses Water-type Pokémon, but his Quagsire is a dual Water/Ground-type, so it is weak to grass attacks. His Gyarados is a Water/Flying-type, so it is weak to Electric and Rock-type moves. Defeating Crasher Wake will grant you the Fen Badge, allowing you to use Defog outside of battle.

Crasher Wake

In the games, Crasher Wake is a jovial and enthusiastic character, encouraging others not to take battles too seriously. He uses the prize money from his victories to help those less fortunate. Interestingly, he is thought to be from outside the Sinnoh region due to his accent, but this is later disproven in Black 2 and White 2, where it is revealed that he was born and raised in Sinnoh.

In terms of gameplay, defeating Crasher Wake will earn trainers the Fen Badge, TM55 (Brine), and the ability to use Defog/Surf outside of battle. In Diamond and Pearl, if he is the fourth Gym Leader defeated, all Pokémon up to level 50 will obey their trainer.

In Platinum Version, players first encounter Crasher Wake when trying to enter the Veilstone Gym, and he also appears in other locations, such as Route 18 in Black 2 and White 2.

Fuchsia City

The Fuchsia City Gym is a Poison-type Pokémon gym, led by Koga in Generations I, III, and VII. In Generations II and IV, Koga's daughter, Janine, takes over as the gym leader. Trainers who defeat Koga or Janine receive the Soul Badge. Fuchsia City is also where you can find the Move Deleter, who can make a Pokémon forget any move, including HM moves, for free.

In order to use the HM move Surf outside of battle, players must obtain the Soul Badge from Koga or Janine. Fuchsia City is also connected to several important routes: Route 15 leads into the city from the east, Route 18 from the west, and the beach of Route 19 is located in the south.
